How to Use Your Elderberry DIY Kit: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Make Elderberry Syrup at Home with Our DIY Elderberry Kit

There’s something incredibly rewarding about making your own elderberry syrup from scratch. The aroma of elderberries and warming spices filling your kitchen, knowing exactly what’s gone into every bottle, and sharing it with your family makes the experience just as enjoyable as the finished syrup.

Our Elderberry DIY Kit has been carefully put together to make the process simple, enjoyable and mess-free. We've measured and blended the ingredients for you, so all you need to add is water and your favourite honey.

Whether it's your first batch or you're a seasoned syrup maker, this step-by-step guide will have you enjoying homemade elderberry syrup in no time.

What You'll Need

  • 1 x Elderberry DIY Kit

  • Water (as directed on your kit)

  • Honey OR sweetener of choice

  • A medium saucepan

  • The complimentary reusable simmer bag (included with every kit) or a fine mesh sieve

  • A clean glass bottle or jar

  • A refrigerator

Step 1: Prepare Your Ingredients

Open your Elderberry DIY Kit and remove the complimentary reusable simmer bag.

You have two options:

Option 1 (Recommended): Place all of the herbal ingredients into the simmer bag before placing it into your saucepan. This makes cleanup quick and easy.

Option 2: Add the ingredients directly into the saucepan and strain them later using a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth.

Both methods produce the same delicious syrup.

Step 2: Add Water

Pour the recommended amount of water into the saucepan with your elderberry blend. Sometimes stovetops can differ, we always recommend more water initially.

Bring the mixture to a gentle boil before reducing it to a low simmer.

Allow it to simmer for about 30 to 45 min. This concentrates the rich berry flavour while allowing the traditional herbs and spices to infuse beautifully.

As it simmers, your kitchen will be filled with the comforting aroma of elderberries, cinnamon, ginger and star anise. Feel free to add lemon or other spices if you like.

Step 3: Remove the Herbs

If you're using the included simmer bag, simply lift it out of the saucepan and allow the liquid to drain back into the pot. You can gently press the bag with a spoon or tongs to release any remaining liquid.

If you simmered the ingredients loose, allow the mixture to cool slightly before carefully pouring it through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a bowl or jug.

The complimentary simmer bag is one of our customers' favourite additions because it makes the entire process cleaner, quicker and virtually mess-free.

Step 4: Add Your Honey

Allow the liquid to cool until it is warm but no longer hot.

Now stir in your honey until it has completely dissolved.

Adding honey once the mixture has cooled slightly helps preserve its natural flavour and creates a beautifully smooth syrup.

One of the best parts about making your own syrup is choosing your favourite Australian honey. Every variety gives your finished syrup its own unique flavour.

Step 5: Bottle and Refrigerate

Pour your finished elderberry syrup into a clean glass bottle or jar.

Seal tightly and store it in the refrigerator.

For the best quality, enjoy your homemade syrup within 60 days. It can often keep well for up to 90 days when continuously refrigerated.

You can also freeze portions for up to six months, making it easy to always have some on hand.

Can I use maple syrup or another sweetener?

Of course this is the beauty of the DIY kit, you can tweak it to your liking and taste.

Can I freeze homemade elderberry syrup?

Yes. Freeze it in airtight containers or ice cube trays for up to six months. Defrost in the refrigerator before use.
